RAIMUND ABRAHAM: PERSONAL MEMORIES

Last Wednesday my friend, the internationally famous architect Raimund Abraham, died. The car he was driving collided in downtown Los Angeles with a Metropolitan Transportation Authority Bus. He was 76.

I met Raimund in July 2008 at a 75th birthday dinner given for him by Diane Lewis his friend, colleague and favorite student. The party was in the garden of the East Village townhouse where Diane lives. At Raimund’s request, he was the only invited male.

Nineteen women and Raimund gathered in the summer twilight around a large table surrounded by ivy covered walls. A singer from the Beijing Opera came to serenade him. There was candlelight, caviar, vitello tonatto and toasts with champagne. “Every day is a birthday.” Was Raimund’s speech.

I complimented him on his hat and we were instant friends. To Raimund this meant I could be telephoned at whim any time night or ... Read More

Folklore and fairy tales were the theme at Sophie Theallet’s fall/winter 2010 show; the collection transported us far, far away, to a forest, perhaps, where a magical journey comes to life, capturing the feeling of when a girl puts on a pretty dress and turns into a princess.

Almost one hundred years ago women across much of the globe celebrated the first International Women's Day in 1911. The idea to create a unified day of celebration was originally voiced by Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) in order to provide a stronger yearly platform for women to press for their demands. While originally on March 19th, to mark the anniversary of the 1848 revolution, when the Prussian King first recognized the strength of the armed people and gave way and he promised, among other things, to give women the right to vote. It was then converted to March 8th two years later, because very few people understood reference to Prussia, and has remained ever since. In 1975 during International Women's Year, IWD was recognized by the UN. On this lovely International Women's Day, Dior Celebrated the ... Read More

It looks like mid-town really is the new downtown. To the Breslin, the Gramercy, and Monkey Bar, we can now add The Royalton to the ever growing list of hotel lounges that double as destination nightlife spots. This latest incarnation, however, owes its debt to Lady Gaga - at least indirectly. Her best friend and stylist, DJ Lady Starlight, kicked off what is to be a weekly event this past Tuesday night, spinning vintage vinyl records (some of which were her father's) to a crowd of downtown fixtures including Becka Diamond and Nylon's Faran Krentcil.

From 8 to 12 every Tuesday, Starlight, along with host Chris Shipps, promises to bring back an "authenticity and realness that nyc nightlife hasn't seen since the 1990s." For those who crave a scene, but could do without the deafening hip-hop that usually comes along with it, Royalton Tuesdays are now THE destination. The rock and ... Read More

SIGN ME

Recently, astrological authority and sun sign love guru Liz Rose teamed up with Skinny Jeans expert Catherine Heart to create a collection of ‘Stellar’ jeans . Their skin-clinging legs, specially constructed inseams and artful shading and fading conspire to make women look really thin as well as really cool. Their fashion show at Juliet Supper Club featured Todd English nibbles, Moet & Chandon, a large, jovial crowed and a live and lively band.

Tucked into the “goodie bag” was Liz’s book, bedazzled! An Astrological Guide to Earthly Bliss with Your Man. This tome has been translated into many languages, including French, Dutch and Russian. It contains such advice as (for handling a Sagittarius man), “Let him see how appealing his friends find you” and (for a Pisces), “Just make sure he’s not married before you start an adventure”. It’s all quite sensible and is also very ... Read More

Rosson Crow celebrated the opening of her new exhibit Bowery Boys at 18 Wooster Street Thursday evening. Her newest work of large-scale oil paintings explore the history of the "bad boy" archetype in underground art and how it shaped New York City. Crow, who is originally from Texas, took residence in New York while creating this exhibit, a process she has grown accustomed to when she creates pieces in order to engulf herself into a cityscape. She has also created exhibits that were so linked to the city and subject of her works that she took residence in Los Angeles and Paris, creating works that have captured an aura of uniquely representative pieces. Her works will be on display March 27th.
